The “Gilmore Girls”
My mom first came to know about 1Up Victoria Single Parent Resource Centre through one of our neighbors and we have been coming here ever since. That was over 12 years ago. My first really solid memory of the Centre is from when I was 8 years old. My Mom came in to look around and do some shopping and I found this keyboard piano mat that you stepped on to play music. I had that mat for a long time and it still makes me smile to think about it.
I also know that my mom found a sense of community here and that one of the first things she did was take the Lighthouse Parenting Program. I didn’t come with her, but today when we were asking her about it, she spoke about how even after all these years, she remembers how good it felt to be able to talk about things that “wouldn’t make sense” in other parenting circles. She said the class left her feeling knowledgeable about her parenting abilities and like she wasn’t alone.
As for me, I can be shy and sometimes I’m more comfortable viewing the world, than I am participating in it. That’s why it was such a big step for me to come and start volunteering at 1Up when I was 14. At the time, it was really important to me to be giving back to our community, and 1Up is a place where I have always felt comfortable coming. Now, looking back on it, it is easy to see why. I’m surrounded by people who have known me for most of my life, and who care for me just as I am. When I’m here, I know I am taking the time to step out of my comfort zone and participate and that is a pretty great feeling.
